Welcome to Boise, Idaho.
Boise is the capital and largest city of Idaho, a state in the United States of America. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 185,787. It is the county seat of Ada County, and the primary city of the Boise metropolitan area.
The name of the city is pronounced "BOY-see." The name, "Boise" comes from a French word, boise, meaning "wooded". It first came to use among French-Canadian fur trappers in the nineteenth century as a name for the Boise River. The name was apparently a translation of an earlier English name for it, the Wood River.
Many large regional, national and international companies are headquartered here, including Simplot Corporation, Boise Cascade, Albertsons, Micron Technology and Hewlett-Packard.
Boise is home to Boise State University, the state's largest university with an enrollment of over 15,000 students, as well as 34 grade schools, 9 junior high schools, and 5 high schools.

Known as the "City of Trees," Boise is also rich in culture. It is home to the largest concentration of Basque people living outside of Spain in the world, numbering about 20,000. There is a large Basque festival (known as Jaialdi) once every 5 years, and a vibrant Basque section of the city.
Boise is also a regional hub for jazz and theater. The Gene Harris Jazz Festival is hosted in Boise every year.
Boise is home to the Boise Art Museum, which hosts several traveling exhibits each year. The city is also home to numerous theatres, such as the Boise Little Theatre (Idaho's oldest continuous theater company), the Boise Contemporary Theatre, and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.
Boise is known for its low crime rate, extensive greenbelt running through the city, trendy downtown and quality of life. The city has been cited by publications like Forbes, Fortune and Sunset for its quality of life. One of Boise's major attractions is the neighboring mountains and the Boise Foothills. The foothills, to the immediate north of the city, are popular for hiking and mountain biking.
For winter recreation, Bogus Basin Mountain Resort (a mere 16 miles from Boise city limits) provides excellent skiing and snowboarding facilities within an hour's drive of downtown.
Semi-professional sports teams in Boise include the short-season Class A Boise Hawks (Minor League Baseball), the Idaho Steelheads of the East Coast Hockey League, and the Idaho Stampede of the Continental Basketball Association.
Boise's air transportation need is served by the Boise Airport, located in the Southeastern part of the city.
Also located in Boise is the World Center for Birds of Prey. The World Center for Birds of Prey was a key part of the re-establishment of the Peregrine falcon and the subsequent removal from the Endangered Species list.
Boise Zoo: Located in beautiful Julia Davis Park and home to over 170 animals from 70 various species, Zoo Boise is one of the most popular attractions in the Treasure Valley as well as a living science education facility with more than 200,000 visitors each year.
